Chess is a two-player strategy game played on a chessboard. Each player starts with sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns, each moving in unique ways. The objective is to checkmate the opponent's king, leading to inevitable capture.

Rules

Players: One controls the white pieces, the other black. White moves first, and turns alternate. Objective: Checkmate the opponent's king or force a resignation. End Game: Besides checkmate, games can end in a draw through several scenarios.

Movement

General: Pieces move to unoccupied squares or capture opponent's pieces by occupying their square. Special Moves: Includes castling (king and rook maneuver) and en passant (special pawn capture). Pawn Promotion: Reaches the far end of the board and promotes to a queen or another piece, except the king.

Check and Checkmate

Check: Occurs if the king could be captured on the next move. The player must escape check. Checkmate: Game ends if a player's king is in check and no legal moves can remove or block the threat. Draws Stalemate: No legal moves and the king is not in check. Insufficient Material: Neither player has enough pieces to force a checkmate. Agreement: Both players decide to end the game in a draw.
